A Personal Note – Celebrating Christmas & Happy New Year 2014!

My Book Had Said It! A Cry For Help! So did My Columns!

Since my family had returned and I came to Oman in 1972 – I have never seen people being so ‘unfriendly and lesser tolerant’ not only for those celebrating – but even those that had joined in – and sending messages and greetings – even if they are not celebrating! The most few emails that I ever got in my life was for this year – and shows sadly where some elements in society is turning to nowadays! There maybe many reasons – but I believe my book published in September 2009 – before the Arab Springs – said it!

Trafford USA Publishers – QuoteAddressing the increased extremism, fundamentalism, and lack of tolerance and forbearance in the Arab workforce, Author Majid Al Suleimany presents A Cry for Help!: Arabian Management Services – Context and Perspectives.

In three parts, A Cry for Help! concentrates on the management styles and aspects of companies located in the Arabian Gulf Cooperation Council that encompasses Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. It discusses the:

• Growing radicalization of local staff • Misbehaving expatriates • Unhappy, dissatisfied staff • Poor treatment of staff, especially by European Western staff • Increasing extremism and fundamentalism in offices • Sensitive, related issues

In A Cry for Help!, Suleimany, a management expert, focuses on what is particular about the type of Arab management, its context and perspectives, and what is peculiar, special, or particular to that work in the context and comparison to management styles of other nations. Using personal experiences, examples, and illustrations, Suleimany exposes the new reality and truth and moves away from the trend and approach of hiding issues and problems – Unquote!

Unfortunately, this lone voice that stood out to speak more for ‘live and let live’ – more patience, tolerance, co-existence and harmony – between societies and peoples was subjugated and killed by The New Peoples under control of my columns in the newspaper! At least it was a voice that preached the right messages – and especially directed at our Youth!

I am not the enemy or the adversary as some may perhaps think – but those that targeted and aimed this voice from speaking The Truth – are only doing a big disservice to not only themselves – but everybody else in the society!

Do I need to say anything anymore? Sad and tragic really!

Today another Arab country (Iraq) is using its own Air Force to target its own peoples! So what is next – I ask??

Best Wishes and Regards,

Majid Al Suleimany

The Aftermath! By Majid Al Suleimany Reply

At My Workplace (Outlook)!

The Aftermath!

After my last week article titled “Living together as one in peace and harmony!” – I had received considerable responses in my websites – including some personal Emails and Messages. Overall, there was support and allegiances in what was written. I found very encouraging some responses sympathizing and in support coming also from broad minded objective pragmatic and secular foreigners too! Oman was indicated as an example and a ‘beacon of hope’ for mankind of how people can live together as one in peace, love and harmony – and the respects and esteem given to foreigners in the country!

However, like in most cases, there were some dissenting forces and I find the following as one of the strongest. As an Administrator of my own blogs, I do accept that the names given are ‘perhaps not that real’ – but this does not bother me at all – as I look more on content than who is sending it!

One of the contributors had said – Quote – Message: I have read some of the articles. The best part I mostly enjoy is that you write from the bottom of your heart. All the information is based on your 35 years of experience and not from stories told by friends or read from books.

Your writing skills are excellent. I pray to ALLAH INSHALLAH you succeed in your dreams and that day where all positions are filled with qualified Omanis only. Your are one of the very few Omanis who disclose the pain we Omanis endure because of the expatriates – unquote.

In my book A Cry For Help! – http://www.myown-ebooks.com – see above image – I have highlighted the problems and issues being faced by especially qualified and educated young Omanis – especially when they want to join – or are accepted in ‘by a pointing barrel of a gun’ to take them in’ so to speak – excuse the melodrama! Even qualified and fully experienced Omanis for that matter too!

That is why I wrote the book – so my conscience can be clear and clean that I have done my part in saying it ‘as it is’! The rest is not upto me!

After the book was published – it was the last time that I received any job offers – even temporary and or consultancy – and any that I received after that did not last much longer – and I was a victim of my own situation and circumstances. Sadly and tragically from even fellow Omanis GMs and others – because they are susceptible to receive the advices and counsels of the ‘active foreign hands’ – so to speak!

It is a double-edged sword that cuts both ways – but the future for sure is for the young Omanis in their destiny, legacy and future – whether this is accepted or not – does not matter!

In one well known case what I thought was a friend and whom I had confided on my misgivings – was God Forgive me in this Holy Month of Fasting – perhaps instrumental after him meeting with this GM I knew well before – and as already said in my columns to leave within half an hour with the ultimatum given to continue in that place. I need money for sure – but respects and esteem more!

Though truthfully only some of the ‘bad eggs (fish)’ are only few expatriates – but the majority are also indifferent and may even be supportive on the sidelines – as they seem to think this will work for them to their advantages. Let us not forget also the die-hards old guards in Top Management – and Owners – especially family-run – but sadly can even go across to bigger and National places – that these things should not happen – or allow to happen!

In one of the places where a family member was looking for a visa for even business travel – not holidays – an Official sarcastically asked him if ‘you belong to that guy who seems to write a lot in newspapers? Actually it is only one newspaper – but people can be free to say what they want – especially when they think they are in-charge and in-control! I had a good mind to go and meet him – but then I remembered I had better things to do – than bang my head against brick walls!

I am still that much sure and convinced that a time will still yet to come and to pass when people will wish they had been more fair, professional and ethical towards me. Hopefully before I die! But after my books – and seeing all the things happening around us – when one or two send me messages like above – I believe my work has been done – and my conscience is now clear.

Even the book on Road Safety – Behind The Wheel! – with just few exceptions – took a beating. Yet we all know how bad the state of driving has become – and the increased road accidents, tragedies and fatalities – yet a noble and National worthy cause too – but still targeted and singled out for sure! Simply because if this book will be a success – people might want to read my other books – where they are most targeted!

What more I can say now?

Take Care!

Book Review – An Intelligent Man’s Guide To Arab Management.! (Two Books) Reply

Book Review – An Intelligent Man’s Guide To Arab Management.

Oman Vistas Magazine – Essential Reading on Business & Economic Development – February 2010.

Psychology of Arab Management Thinking deals with everything you need to know about the Arab Management process and nuances of the workplace in Oman. The Author quotes mainly from personal experiences and draws on his observations of human behavior at the workplace.

The book provides a perspective from the Author’s personal experiences in dealing with expatriates and locals. It is an outmost candid representation and objective evaluation of behavioral and management issues, organization values and work ethics at the workplace in Oman.

In his book, he puts forth hard hitting facts in a sincere attempt to speak the truth about the realities in Arab Management. The attempt is not to be construed as an attempt to jeopardize people, instead it is written with an objective to make people aware, help them learn and make amends to the current management system.

This process of realization and change are being laid out in order to help the management in their development and success and raise the bar in terms of achievement and learning and increase value added employee contributions at the workplace.

In the preface of the book, he reveals “Arab Managers have a low opinion and rating of his own people and values and esteems outsiders to his own”. This book is definitely not a surreptitious (secret) account of workplace facts, but introspective (thoughtful) writing well meant to assess and evaluate facts with objectivity at its best.

In Chapter 14 “Is there any hope for the Arab Manager? Or what should the Arab Manager do?” he puts forth the fundamental and most critical question of whether such a management is able to evoke a sense of morale, motivation and ownership of tasks from employees at the workplace.

This book is a reference point for a better understanding between people and organizations, especially in the unprecedented business scenario where employees need to stay together as a team. He speaks about incumbent issues of working with certain managers where he was asked to over deliver as he was presumably paid more than the directors back in their country. He speaks about pertinent issues of preferential treatment, lack of transparency and dilution of organizational values of integrity and team work at the workplace in order to further the personal interests of the management.

Citing case studies and quotes especially from organization inputs, he provides plausible instances for clash of old autocratic and new management concepts, importance of interpersonal and communication skills, training and implementing new practices. He puts forth principles that will have a greater role to play in challenging the current practices in Arab Management for the better.

This book is a revelation of the realities of the Arab workplace and is recommended to be read as the Writer is drawing from his own personal experiences and exposures and narrated with live demonstrations, examples and illustrations with the aim of improvement in the Arab Management practices
