GOODBYE!!!

The Aftermath! By Majid Al Suleimany Reply

For Wednesday August 1st 2012

At My Workplace (Outlook)!

The Aftermath!

After my last week article titled “Living together as one in peace and harmony!” – I had received considerable responses in my websites – including some personal Emails and Messages. Overall, there was support and allegiances in what was written. I found very encouraging some responses sympathizing and in support coming also from broad minded objective pragmatic and secular foreigners too! Oman was indicated as an example and a ‘beacon of hope’ for mankind of how people can live together as one in peace, love and harmony – and the respects and esteem given to foreigners in the country!

However, like in most cases, there were some dissenting forces and I find the following as one of the strongest. As an Administrator of my own blogs, I do accept that the names given are ‘perhaps not that real’ – but this does not bother me at all – as I look more on content than who is sending it!

One of the contributors had said – Quote – Message: I have read some of the articles. The best part I mostly enjoy is that you write from the bottom of your heart. All the information is based on your 35 years of experience and not from stories told by friends or read from books.

Your writing skills are excellent. I pray to ALLAH INSHALLAH you succeed in your dreams and that day where all positions are filled with qualified Omanis only. Your are one of the very few Omanis who disclose the pain we Omanis endure because of the expatriates – unquote.

In my book A Cry For Help! – http://www.myown-ebooks.com – see above image – I have highlighted the problems and issues being faced by especially qualified and educated young Omanis – especially when they want to join – or are accepted in ‘by a pointing barrel of a gun’ to take them in’ so to speak – excuse the melodrama! Even qualified and fully experienced Omanis for that matter too!

That is why I wrote the book – so my conscience can be clear and clean that I have done my part in saying it ‘as it is’! The rest is not upto me!

After the book was published – it was the last time that I received any job offers – even temporary and or consultancy – and any that I received after that did not last much longer – and I was a victim of my own situation and circumstances. Sadly and tragically from even fellow Omanis GMs and others – because they are susceptible to receive the advices and counsels of the ‘active foreign hands’ – so to speak!

It is a double-edged sword that cuts both ways – but the future for sure is for the young Omanis in their destiny, legacy and future – whether this is accepted or not – does not matter!

In one well known case what I thought was a friend and whom I had confided on my misgivings – was God Forgive me in this Holy Month of Fasting – perhaps instrumental after him meeting with this GM I knew well before – and as already said in my columns to leave within half an hour with the ultimatum given to continue in that place. I need money for sure – but respects and esteem more!

Though truthfully only some of the ‘bad eggs (fish)’ are only few expatriates – but the majority are also indifferent and may even be supportive on the sidelines – as they seem to think this will work for them to their advantages. Let us not forget also the die-hards old guards in Top Management – and Owners – especially family-run – but sadly can even go across to bigger and National places – that these things should not happen – or allow to happen!

In one of the places where a family member was looking for a visa for even business travel – not holidays – an Official sarcastically asked him if ‘you belong to that guy who seems to write a lot in newspapers? Actually it is only one newspaper – but people can be free to say what they want – especially when they think they are in-charge and in-control! I had a good mind to go and meet him – but then I remembered I had better things to do – than bang my head against brick walls!

I am still that much sure and convinced that a time will still yet to come and to pass when people will wish they had been more fair, professional and ethical towards me. Hopefully before I die! But after my books – and seeing all the things happening around us – when one or two send me messages like above – I believe my work has been done – and my conscience is now clear.

Even the book on Road Safety – Behind The Wheel! – with just few exceptions – took a beating. Yet we all know how bad the state of driving has become – and the increased road accidents, tragedies and fatalities – yet a noble and National worthy cause too – but still targeted and singled out for sure! Simply because if this book will be a success – people might want to read my other books – where they are most targeted!

What more I can say now?

Take Care!

The Other Side! – The Closing Chapters! 1

At My Workplace! (Outlook)

 The Other Side!

Or The Closing Chapters of The Story!

  • The world suffers now not because of evil people– but because of good people who have decided to remain silent – Albert Einstein
  •  Change before Change changes you! – Anon.
  •  If you want to stay in this world, be like a lotus flower who stays in the dirty water, who was born in the dirty water, but never gets adopted to dirty water Prem Rawat – Indian Guru..

It is a fact of life that in some people and places – nothing will change – even if the whole ground below them is crumbling down under their own feet! They will always continue to think and act as if they are more equal to others – have more rights – and are always perfect, right and correct!

Image Albert Einstein

A few days back I met this good friend of mine. He was asking me as to what had happened to me – because he saw me again complaining about issues and topics – and things that I used to complain about after the business collapse in 2003 – over 9 years ago. He was asking me – I thought you had moved on – and left the past behind you? Then he told me about this great book he had read – entitled The Secret.

Book Image – The Secret

According to WikipediaThe Secret is a best-selling 2006 self-help book written by one Rhonda Byrne, based on the earlier film of the same name. It is based on the Laws of Attraction and claims that Positive Thinking can create life-changing results such as increased wealth, health, and happiness.

The book has sold over 21 million copies and been translated into 44 languages, but has nevertheless attracted a great deal of discussions and controversy, as well as being parodied (misrepresented/distorted) in several TV programs. You can find more information and details of the book by putting any search engine for “The Secret”

He then went on to tell me about this film he had seen titled ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It?’  He persuaded me to see it – as it was being shown free in ShowTime – already subscribed for!

The Film is a biographical sketch of the life of Tina Turner (Actress Angela Bassett), and her disastrous marriage to Singer and Husband Ike Turner (Actor Larry Fishburne) – the man who had created her career while nearly destroying her life. She struggles to escape from under his constant abuse. The film offers a glossy but intense portrait of her rapid rise to stardom – and the jealousies and envies of her own husband – because she had become more popular than him.

Despite Ike’s attempts to woo her back, Tina Turner eventually prevails and finds solo success, accomplishing her dreams without Ike. The film shows of her courage and determination to overcome and succeed – finding within her the inner strength to fight back and overcome. She is shown as taking chances – and refusing to remain under the domination and control of her bullying husband.

There is this part that I really had liked. There is a metaphor drawn about the flower lotus. The lotus is a flower that blooms in the mud. The thicker and deeper the mud, the more beautiful the lotus blooms!

The Lotus Flower

It is a metaphor meaning that in real life there is cause and effect. You can still bloom (blossom) when around you is all mud! Sometimes you are required to change your inner self first – so to cause effect and change. What it means is that the more tests in life the better person you are likely to be more of. That is if you handle yourself well – starting with your inner self first and foremost – to fight back, overcome and to succeed.

Last few days back, I watched this programme The Inner War In Syria in Al Jazeera Television. It was an interview of the famous Syrian Artist, Cartoonist and Activist – Ali Farzat. He is seen to casually comment – Nothing you tell these peoples will have any effect on them! What it meant was that you are just wasting your time, efforts and energies to tell them things which they are not going to hear you first – and secondly by doing so – you are just exposing yourself to outmost dangers and risks – if not your own life even!

Image Ali Farzat

My friend was asking me – One time you yourself had said that you will stop banging your head against brick walls! Because in the process you only hurt your head – getting it swollen – and even bleeding! And as you yourself like to quote him  – Napoleon Do not interfere with someone set in destroying himself!

Image Napoleon on horseback

What is written to happen will just happen! Take a full break and rest now! There is nothing that you can do that can stop anything that can or will happen – or for you to try to change things!

The point is still – if you just leave one alone – do not poke your fingers into his eyes and then expect him to remain silent and not squirm – or expect him to turn the other cheek ! Or if you think you are better than him – and have more rights to say and do what you want! Then simply there should be no problems existing between anyone in the first place!

My friend was saying to meYou had said many things in the 1980s – and they all came true – even more than what you had expected! Yet your own career was tainted and you were marginalized – and you came to suffer the consequences of your own actions – and because of your own sincerity, genuineness and feelings. You always had ended as the Loser! Marked as ‘trouble-maker’ and ‘with chips on his shoulder’! Even if you had not cast the first – or even the second stone!

It is time to for you stop my friend! They are only mocking and teasing you – speaking evil of you behind your back! Take care now of your own health – your own life – and the time left for you on earth – for once be selfish – and just take care of yourself – your own family – your children – and your own grandchildren! The rest are not important. Take your own advice – and use it. You did what you could – and the time is now over!

Thank you my friend – from the bottom of my heart. Only a person who really cares and feels for you will tell you the truth! Thanks again – my good friend!

Take Care!

Arab Management: Far Deeper In Troubled Waters!

The Book Theme:-

1                    A frank, honest, open and call-a-spade-a-spade no punch-spared, no barrels held stuff and no frills play book exposing

2                    Still the ever increasing lack of ethics, principles, professionalism and tolerance in the workplaces.

3                    With now ever more increased radicalisation, extremism and fundamentalising of the Offices environment and in similar to the overall similar fast changing facts of the ground in the region.

4                     A Tell All As It Is in outlooks, approaches and focuses still prevalent and dominant.

5                    It looks into the future in Prophecy and Prediction of what is expected and what is to come – immediately now, in the short term and in the future.

6                                            Others – Please see below

Addressing the increased extremism, fundamentalism, and still the ever increasing now lack of tolerance and forbearance in the Arab workforce, Author Majid Al Suleimany presents Arab Management: Far Deeper In Troubled Waters! Context and Perspectives – Arabian Management Series.

In three parts, the book concentrates on the management styles and aspects of the companies located in the Arabian Gulf Cooperation Council that encompasses

Oman, UAE – United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

In deep self-analysis and in consciousness, it critically looks into and assesses any changes in particular – if any – in Arab Management – post The Arab Spring Uprisings that shook the countries in the region post January 2011 – after the First Arab Spring Uprisings in Tunisia with the self immolation of Mohamed Buazizi in Tunisia.

The book critically reviews, analyses and discusses the:-

v  Changes in the Arab Management aspects (if any!) – post the Arab Spring Uprisings from January 2011 onwards.

v  The far more and ever increased and widening divide between The Old Guards and The New Younger Graduates Intakes and Generation

v  Lessons that have still not been learnt despite all the changes in the MENA Region in Arab Spring Uprisings.

v  Still the ever ‘Ostrich Head in the ground’ – ‘Hard of Hearing’ and Push The Dirt under the carpet’ Management approaches – especially from the local environments, focuses and outlooks!

v  The ever faster growing radicalization of the local staff – especially The Youth and in particular.

v  Still some misbehaving expatriates – and the old guards locals!

v  Unhappy, dissatisfied local staff

v  Still more poor treatment of staff, especially by some Expatriate Management

v  The ever more increasing extremism and fundamentalism in the offices

v  Other sensitive and related issues

In Arab Management: Far Deeper In Troubled Waters!  Majid Al Suleimany – an Arab Management Consultant, Advisor and Expert – focuses on what is particular about the type of Arab Management, its context and perspectives, and what is peculiar, special, or particular to that work in the context and in comparison to management styles of other nations.

Using personal experiences, examples, and illustrations, Al Suleimany exposes the new reality and truth and moves away from the trend and approach of hiding

exposes the new reality and truth – and moves away from the trend and approach of hiding issues and problems.

“It is a unique book, written in a unique style. It is a soul searching and critical evaluation of one’s own people in the field. He extols the culture and importance of work in his religion and the pitfalls and lackluster attitude of the Managers in position about the Principles and Process of Management.” – Editor Features, The Observer

“Someone must have the guts and courage to write about this growing danger and phenomena with us here now – before it is too late for everyone!” – American CEO

“The book is critical but objective—and portrays the Arab mind and focus in its proper perspectives.” – Senior Omani Public Official

“Your writing is quite exceptional, informative, and gripping.”

– Omani High Official

“There is a great need for improvements and achievements in this particular arena —your book has tried well to cover all these to a very successful extent.” – British CEO

“Part of the problem of Arab Management is the inherited autocratic society we live in, and confronted by new Management concepts and innovation believing in freedom of expression, empowerment, delegation, transparency, ethics and accountabilities – and the clash between the two.” – Indian CEO

“Despite everything that has happened so far since the troubles started last year – nothing has changed much at the workplaces – if not for the worse in divisions between locals and expatriates – and in rivalries, polarisation, jealousies, envies – and lack of ethics, transparencies and professionalism” – A VP HR (Omani).

Even after some Public Officials lost their jobs, nothing has changed much even in the Public Arena – Retired Public Official

And so many others.

This will be a Tell-All – at whatever repercussions and consequences. Enough is Enough! Things cannot be allowed to go on like this – too many lies and deceptions already!

I am looking for partial sponsorship, financial backing and support especially from those who can – and believe in me – and in this planned new book!

Allah God be with you all – Amin  Amen

The Road Safety Book – Novel Type – In Simple English. 3

April 5th 2012

The Road Safety Book – Novel Type – In simple English.

I am now writing my 6th book on Road Safety Stories.

The Book Plan – To write Short Emotional Stories that have happened to people because of Road Accidents!

The book will be a novice first time type ever written in Oman as in a reading novel type format – written in the simplest of English – as it is envisaged that many of the  Readers English is a second language (or third) after Arabic – and to make it easy for them to understand and comprehend – taking into account the importance of the subject to the increased number of road accidents and fatalities in Oman.

The New Book on Road Safety – Novel Type

IMAGES FOR DEMONSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY!

Writing has always been in my blood and my hobby and passion.

 Road Safety Article – 1990s

I wrote this article for Times of Oman in May 1994 titled – Stray Thoughts on Oman Traffic – and reproduced by PDO Al Fahal Magazine June 11 1994 titled – Drive Safely for the Sake of Family and Loved Ones! – See appended below

A         Peoples’ Stories – All True Cases.

.The story must be about road accidents and had happened in Oman mainly.

  •  To write about Road Traffic Accidents in a book format and using simple English language for all to understand and appreciate.
  •  To put catching titles per story such as :-
  •  Newly wedded died on road accident
  •  Mother is still grieving!
  • Grandmother left alone in the house!
  • Utility bill syndrome
  •  Full Family lost in the accident!
  • Bad timing to travel after midnight!
  • Wrong Job Relief causes agony!
  • Fast trip ended shortly!
  • No more singing in the rain!
  • Mother – Do Not Cry For Me!
  • You should have been firm with me Mum – now I am gone!
  • To make it interesting and true. And things that we have seen in reality happening in front of our very eyes.
  •  To give accident account, possible causes and lessons learnt.
  •  As the writer will have the full rights to lay out the story according to the flow of information
  • Ask people who have No Objections to write their own true stories with photos and blogs.
  • Include photos of as many car accidents and lessons to learn! Preferably in colour format.
  • We need to write this book in view of the high road fatalities and accidents – and starting with schools.
  • The idea can be expanded with a picturesque book for Primary Schools (Arabic also) in the future – but it will have to be in corporation with others (Arabic not that god for writing up!)

 Any others

 B         How The Idea Originated!

It came some time back from an Omani General Manager  (and a very good personal friend!) and whose Executive Secretary and the whole family perished in a road accident two years ago!

I knew the late girl well – see sample story appended.

This idea was given to me also by a good Indian Fan of mine as something worthwhile to consider to do with my Writing Skills and Experiences and taking it up from the Five Books already published by me.

 See sample story here

C         Issues

There are many issues to handle first – like people willing to talk first with you and their willing for their stories to be told? But with the right approach and tactics this can be approached in the right way for success.

Otherwise we will not use names but create our own names, initial, nome-de-plumes and pseudonyms

 D         Summary

The book can take off very well. I have a strong feeling on this one!

To be published in Oman as we may ask sponsors also from others like PDO, ROP, Newspapers etc – but the lesser the better! I want to own full rights and in publishing too.

I am looking for financial support and in monetary help and in financial more sponsorship.

Also if you know of any stories as above to share with me and other Readers

Or if people willing to come forward to share their own stories – as lessons for others to learn!

Or any views or suggestions that you may possibly have.

Let us not forget life is not permanent or forever – but we will be remembered for what we have done and contributed in this world SADAKA JARIYAH

Rest in Peace – RAW!

Peace Be Upon Her!

In Remembrance – Feeling Very Sad Today!

Wednesday February 9th 2011.

She had the most beautiful, enchanting and blossoming smile that you ever saw in such a pretty girl like RAW!

Always cheerful and helpful – people flocked in and out of her Office just to visit and talk to her! Always a kind word and gesture to everyone – if it was the last sandwich which she had to keep for herself – she would offer it to you and she would go without!

The old man went up the stairs to the offices as he was afraid of using the lift! He was a very angry man – he had received a wrong electricity bill that went to over a Thousand Omani Rials! His electricity was also disconnected! He had travelled all the way to The Head Office from the Interior – because he did not receive any cheers from the Branch.

He was shouting and addressing me – I had come in temporarily as The HR Consultant! How can my bill be so high? Last time I paid was less than OMR 20 (US Dollars 60)? I live with my wife and my two sons only in the small house!

Hearing the commotions, RAW stepped out from her Office. Abuuiiy! (Father!) Please come and sit down. She brought him water and coffee. Relaxed, the old man started crying! He was ashamed of himself – for shouting so loudly to so many others – and ‘making just a nuisance’ of himself! Do not cry Father she said to him. I will call the GM out of the meeting to see you just now!

Do not worry – she assured him – I will take care of you! And she did…. the old man got his electricity bill cancelled and the electricity returned – and a company car to take him home to his village 250 kilometers away. RAW also gave him Company Complimentary gifts – that is RAW for you – always caring and feeling for others! As a Consultant even for me – this was a great learning experience in kindness, care, feelings and in humanity – all RAW!

Wednesday February 9th 2011.

I was calling this good friend of mine a CEO of a National Company – and he gave me the ‘shock of my life’ to tell me that his Executive Secretary – and a First Class High Profile lady in my books had died as another casualty figure (statistics) just recently – after asking him how she was and having not received any emails from her for quite a while. I had covered this poor lady in My Books as one great person who had always stood by me in offering me support, kind words and in encouragement in my books.

I had never expected to cry again! For me I try best to hold back my tears very much. But failed miserably this time! I still fail whenever I remember her. This poor lady was amongst one of the ‘casualty figures and statistics’ that we read in the newspapers every day and week – without abating an eyelid – as the ‘usual stories’ we read in the newspapers. Or the usual pun – so what else is new?

I also did read this article by one Omani Columnist in the other newspaper titled Killer roundabout’ rings alarm bells in Mahdahby Fahad Al Mukrashi. Every week we see also in the newspapers about road casualty figures in the newspapers – but as usual in the coming story we never imagine or visualize that it could be someone we know well or related to.

It seemed that an Omani family of 5 adults and 5 children had decided to get into a saloon car and drive all the way to Abu Dhabi in UAE. They decided to have lunch there and then to return on the same day. At 21:30 hrs, the father of the family perhaps overlooked   the Mahdah round about and caught by surprise – he panicked and braked sharply – and the car rolled over several times. Six members of the family died immediately but the father escaped with minor injury because he was wearing a seat belt and was awake and alone behind the wheels.

This is one girl that I really liked and admired – and was always a great fan and supporter of me. She was always encouraging and supportive – of me personally – my books and my writings. The happiest time she was when I dedicated some of her comments in my books and giving her complimentary copies.

She was always sending me nice warm supportive messages – like cheering your day or to make you smile messages. These always used to cheer me a lot – especially when I was feeling down and sad. She was always beaming with smiles and kindness. Pretty smiles full of blossom and enlightenment!

Today I am crying again of the sad news and the gap in my life now. She was a great lady and I miss her terribly!

She had a great sense of humour and tease! Once I asked her if she was interested to get married or what – or why not still. With her usual sense of humour and wit she replied – They are waiting for me to get a higher salary first before they proposed to me! My salary is still small to them!

May Allah SWT Rest her angelic kind soul in eternal peace in this world and the eternal – and open the highest heavens for her – Amin.

Inshallah I will always pray for her so long as I will live – Amin.

My Highest Rated and Read Article in My Websites and in The Oman Daily Observer Columns For 2011.

Dear All & After Compliments;

This is the article – Jobs For The Youth. It got the highest hits and read in my www.majidall.com and reproduced in a number of places! More hits than any other article of mine – which I think is demonstrative of concerns and worries of many – both inside and outside Oman.

Congratulations to us all! Feel free to forward and or reproduce for the greater cause. Bottom line – it is JOBS and FOOD at the table that is the highest and most concern and worry to many people!!

Wishing You All A Happy Peaceful Safe and Loving Caring New Year 2012 to you and to your families.

 Best Wishes and Regards,

 Majid Al Suleimany

Job Creations!

Jobs For The Youth!

Not everything that glitters is gold! – Anon

A few weeks back I had said in my article We Need To Be Serious! – Quote – If you can circumvent the rules and regulations for your benefit – and the others are looking the other way – why not I ask you? Not only in that place but in so many other places too in Town! We Need To Be Serious!

But if even more senior jobs ‘reserved only for Omanis’ like Admin, PRO, Secretaries and Human Resources Managers are being done now openly by expatriates under fanciful names – why not? Incidentally and coincidentally if you go to the Professional Sites liked LinkedIn, you will see them brave enough to call themselves as just plain HR Managers – and nothing to be scared or to be afraid about!

I continued – Quote – There is something that I must also say and repeat here for the benefits of everyone – and I hope common sense, dynamism, realism, pragmatism and vision will come in!

First and foremost – there is no more this element of fear still running or even scantily – and secondly everybody is just fed up to the tilt!

And if you still think that the old games and gimmicks will still work in winning always – you have got it all wrong – and are just deluding no one but yourself only – and those near you! In desperation and last attempt and effort – last week I had written in the same column – Let The Strong Man Win!

Please do not tempt to scare me anymore now – because in the end we will all lose – some even sooner than the others! Perhaps I think I may need to quit now writing anymore for ever – because I always get hurt and pained in the end – and I end with a bloodied face – and swollen head banging it against brick walls! – Unquote.

Today Monday December 5th 2011 I was really elated and overjoyed as a son of the land to read this in the news – Quote Majlis panel to study status of job-seekers. New opportunities to be found … More Omanis likely to get jobs … – Unquote

Creating jobs for especially The Youth is a global dilemma and issue – and we find so many countries involved in this regard – and even some leaders like USA Obama directly involved personally in this. We see issues and aspects all over the Western World now – and we in The Middle East and rest of the world are catching up too!

In all my articles I raise the same issues and points – again and again. I strongly believe in this! In an interview with Oman Economic Review dated January 2000 (11 years ago) I think I gave very good advices to the Nation on aspects of Training, Development and Omanisation – titled Mind Matters!. The article is also reproduced here in my website above. I really wished that people had paid attention – and the same things I repeat in my two Arab Management books – www.majidbooks.com

A person who really cares and feels for you will tell you the truth and facts only – even if you will be cross and angry with him! And you may want to punish and hurt him – just because of his caring, feeling and sincerity towards the causes at hand – and you especially! But my articles Let The Strong Man Win – We Need To Be Serious – This Is Goodbye – are all demonstrative and examples of me now wanting to give up talking any further – and to join the Silent Majority as we will watch things continue to unfold in front of very eyes!

One thing that needs to be said also here – Communications does not have to be in Arabic only to pass on the theme and the messages – because sometimes even signals and body signs can do the trick in communications per se!

We especially the Arabs have this big issue that needs resolving. Apart from the usual rivalries, jealousies, polarisation and wrong judgments and stereotyping others, we fail to see, hear or simply speak – even if we have live examples just happened in learning and in lessons giving! And like in our histories – ‘killing the messenger of bad news’! And the usual approaches of some thinking they have ‘more rights than others’!

The point also to be made here – just because a person speaks fluent that Arabic is not necessarily that a most smart and intelligent person – and to be labelled as a really caring and feeling person either – and can even be an adversary and an enemy! They can do the most damage as the Israeli Arabs – for example as was in the Israeli army! And those speaking to us in English are not necessarily the opposite – or everything negative – to be ignored – and not to be heard. Allah Is Great – our nation is blessed with various experts and talents – all local too!

We need to wake up from the deep slumber we are (conveniently) in – now – than ever before – and before it is too late for everyone! Oman is a multi-racial and multi-ethnic society just like USA is!

Our destiny, legacy and future depend on it – and history and future generations will judge us by our actions – and also inactions!

Take Care!

At My Workplace!

Respects and Mutuality!

For people to respect you – you must respect yourself first!

Writing, to me, is simply thinking through my fingers. — Isaac Asimov

The desire to write grows with writing. — Desiderius Erasmus

If the writing is honest it cannot be separated from the man who wrote it. — Tennessee Williams

In all my articles I keep hammering on the same point and focus always – It is in the Offices and in Offices Dealings – where people are at their worst forms – and how they actually behave, act and interface with one and each other!

A long time ago a ‘good friend’ of mine ‘had joked with me’ that if he had met Madam Wife (MW) in the Offices – as he was now doing – he would make sure that he ‘fought her’ for me – and that I was a (unprintable!) son of a gun! And I did not deserve ‘to politely put it’ to be so lucky! I wondered to myself aloud – if I had met his wife – and if I had told him the very same things he was telling me now – how he would behave and react?

But then his wife was at home cooking, washing, cleaning and raising his children – even though she was – as I had heard later – was an educated and qualified lady – but for him a woman’s place is only at home! No other place! The education and qualifications – according to him – was that she would be a ‘better mother and wife’ – and that is all that counts! The ironical and sad tragic part was that he considered himself as a ‘religious and pious’ person too – but can gravely insult one so easily!

A long time ago there is this ‘a sort of prominent and famous person’ – who had at one time wanted to buy my Consultancy business off me – and let his Indian GM run it for me – whilst I got a monthly dividend – but condition I had to stay at home! Look – he says to me – ‘This is real clean money with no headaches’ – What more do you need? I had refused – because I had wanted to be self-employed and do this thing myself only!

Some months later, when the business had just collapsed first with the drying up first of any further funds and support – a good friend of mine took me to his Offices with the W (Wastah – Influence) cap on to try to get his W for a job for me instead! That is why I am always cynical and sceptical of all these continued talks of being ‘self-employed’ per se!

He was quickly dialling and talking to someone on the loud speaker phone – Guess who is here in my Office now? Yes – it is him! He is looking for a job now! But I am not going to help him at all! Now he will see life in its reality!

The person at the other end was a woman whom I came to realise later was a family member – and that is how far betrayals and let-downs can go! I would have preferred him to say NO straight emphatically and directly to my face – rather than use this way of communications to me! For the rest of my life till they bury me deep in my grave – I have ‘forgiven – but will never forget’!

This is our problem in Oman – and still continuing and never ending! These people do not want any competition from any corners – even the small businesses – let alone SMEs! Actually they have already plates and plates of Biriyani and Pilauw – but they still want that sandwich on your small plate!

You will excuse me for the quote – but the East Africans have an expression that goes on like this – For a person to insult you – he does not have to choose his words carefully and wisely– anything lumped together and thrown to you quickly goes!

It makes all sorts to make this world – and if you want to maintain your health, sanity and faculties- then you must just go along and take the bitter pill – and in many cases just not sugared even!

Happy, Peaceful and Safe New Year 2012! Take Care!

 My Workplace!

Motivating Employees!

When the rate of change outside exceeds the rate of change inside – the end is in sight! – Jack Welch.

The way your employees feel about their job and their workplace determines how motivated they are.

Image – Happy Cheerful Staff!

If you go in the Internet, you will get lots of information and material on this subject – also you can go to any book in Human Resources and or Management to find many such topics in Staff Motivation, Change Management, Staff Retention, Staff Empowerment etc – please see also my website www.mas-trac.com

I will try to attempt to handle this from the Omani (Arab) angle and in sharing my experiences with you. You can also find much more information and details in my Arab Management books – please visit my books website at www.majidbooks.com

My Own Observations – to share with you!

Firstly – in the recent labour situations, we had big companies that staff went on demonstrations – whilst equally some big ones none did. Same case for the smaller companies! So what gives – or is the secret and trick here?

Image – Omani employees stage a demonstration outside their headquarters

A long time ago when I was still working for my Oil Company, I personally had initiated and conducted what is called as a Staff Morale Satisfaction Study (Climate) for my business unit. The unit consisted of approximately 1100 Staff and Employees – and the majority at approximately 70% were Omani Nationals.

The biggest shocker – if you want to call it that – is that it is a costly mistake to get lost in the false theory that more money equals more happy employees. This is particularly true to the Omani employees – of course nobody will ever say No to more money, incentives and added responsibilities and positions – but they were more concerned with the following – especially The Young Omani entrants and graduates intakes.

They were – generally speaking that is – just by points due to the limited column words:-

• Treating Staff correctly and with respect, ethics, professionalism, principles and dignity. Courtesy and Politeness were the key words.

• Good Communication skills and open transparencies without hidden agendas, innuendos and trap-sets – this one upset and irked them the most!

• They need to be told clearly what is expected of them and their deliverables – even for those in Middle and Higher Levels.

• It all comes from bad experiences and getting fingers burnt when dealing with especially expatriate bosses and ‘The-die- hard-old-guards’ locals – who behave more alien than expected. Covered in my books too!

• Give compliments and praises as the process continues for good works and results – people are so busy mini-managing they simply have no time for this!

• Always have a hidden fear and concern that ‘people are looking over their shoulders’ syndromes – and everyone is looking for them to make a mistake and error of judgment before ‘they are jumped upon’!

• As a result, people remain uninvolved and docile – and ‘no risk taking’ factor of any kind!

• As a parent, you know it is difficult to deal with teenager children of your own – so why should your employees – and especially the young set be any different?

• Avoid wrong and grossly stereotyping and analysis – the same young man forced to work in India, Pakistan, Philippines, UK, Europe and USA may well surprise and amaze you!

• Management being accessible to meet, greet and see the employees – from what may sound even small and silly to you – part of the culture and customs.

• Personally, I think that all the recent problems in some of the establishments was the ignorance of this factor mainly!

• Can explain why in some establishments there were simply no troubles of any kind!

• The younger generation is more vocal – and they know their rights and how to go after them – unalike the older generations – change has come in!

• That too spells about their priorities – which does not necessarily relate to the work. This in particular to working extra hours – or come in the days off – and especially declared holidays!

• More social gatherings, competitions and events to be encouraged.

• The fear element that the job is perhaps temporary and that they may lose their jobs in time is a guiding factor in how they behave and relate at work!

• They need constant training, mentoring, counseling and guidance – that is why so many Coach Companies run by fellow Omanis have sprung up and doing good business – or the call in for Local Consultants, Advisors and Experts!

Is It Time For The Expatriates ‘To Start To Think To Start’ To Leave? 1

July 12, 2011

Opinion.

Is It Time For The Expatriates ‘To Start To Think To Start’ To Leave?

A Question For The Expatriates To Ask For Themselves Only!

Prognosis

There was an article a few weeks back by a famed Omani Columnist titled – ‘Fearing axe expats leaving for good’! This is my dire attempt to try to address that assertion being made.

“O my people! I have indeed conveyed to you the Message of my Lord, and I have given you good advise but you like not good advisers.” (Ch 7:73-79 Quran)

Prophet Saleh – (MethuSaleh) – Peace Be Upon Him.

No one is listening to me – now I know how a radio feels! – Grandpa Abe Simpson.

The problem is many people hear – but few listen! – Anon

Importantly and more sadly, it cannot be denied that a lot of things have changed in our Oman now – especially with our Youth! Things will never ever be the same again!  All the things I had tried to caution and counsel have come into being – especially in my two Management books – Psychology of Arab Management Thinking – and more importantly even in the title itself – A Cry for Help! The book was published one year before what had
happened to us! – www.majidbooks.com

Introduction

No one knows how far this is true but the story goes on like this. After Iddi Amin the ex
Ugandan Dictator had ‘chucked out Asians’ from Uganda, there were stories that some local peoples had approached also the then President of Tanzania – Julius Nyerere and asked him – What about us in Tanzania? Are we going also to ask the Asians to leave as Uganda has done?

Iddi Amin had accused the Asians of siding with the British to destroy ‘from within‘the  economy of Uganda. He also said he had received a ‘dream’ from God to ‘chuck out all the Asians’ in Uganda! Nyerere is purported to have replied – No we will not tell anybody to leave – but they will all leave by themselves without us telling them to do so! – Which they did – especially after the ‘Ujamaa’ Socialist policies then! Tanzanian Asians mainly were the next exodus to leave Tanzania – just like their Ugandan brethrens!

Known of his temperamental and unpredictable behaviours, in a speech to his peoples he – Iddi Amin – took a ‘Citizenship’ document of an Asian named Patel – he tore it up and exclaiming – Mr. Patel – you are now no longer the citizen of The Republic of Uganda! He added – No longer ‘Paper Citizens’ – We do not want them here anymore! – To wild acclaim,
applause and cheers from his congregation – of the indigenous African population of Uganda!

There were many of us who had left early from Zanzibar after the bloody revolution of January 1964 to move to places like Dar es Salaam and other places in Tanzania and Kenya mainly. Incidentally few Arabs origins in Uganda were touched by Iddi Amin calling himself as a ‘Muslim’ and allied to the Palestinian cause. I wonder how many Asians who might have been
pro-Palestinians but were still on those planes leaving Uganda for mainly UK, Canada and Australia – and had missed the boat in joint affiliations with Iddi Amin on these leanings?

Anyway, those of us who lived in Tanzania were subjected to continuous embarrassing searches – even at homes – and if known as ex Zanzibar Refugees. The situation went worse after the assassination of Abeid Amani Karume – the then President of Zanzibar – by one ‘Arab’ youth who was pro the system and was working in the Army. They were called ‘Comrades’ or the Socialists supported by Cuba and China mainly – and had sided with the majority Africans against the fellow ‘Arab Government’ under the then the Sultan of Zanzibar – linked to the Al Busaidy family in Oman!

There were also ‘forced marriages’ when Arab, Indian and Persian girls were forced to get married to young African men – and this was the time of mass exodus of ‘coloured’ peoples in Zanzibar. Luckily, India and Iran had accepted their citizens – we Omanis were not that lucky – though the Yemenis were more luckier than us – despite their South Yemen Communist Government was in cohort with the Zanzibar Government – politics make strange bed fellows
indeed!

The point is that Yemenis too were massacred in this bloody Zanzibar revolution, though! Just like the Omanis and the Arabs too – and like in Ruanda even some ‘moderate fellow Africans’ too! This was the first ethnic cleansing in Africa – not the Ruanda ones. In all these the role of ‘our protectors’ the British is all vague – and we keep forgetting they may have their own agendas – which are not necessarily parallel and linked to us then the Sultanate of Zanzibar – or the Arab side either!

You will forgive me for going far stretched out in all these – but the connections and filling in the dots will become hopefully very clear! Give me a shout – if not!

As a College student in Morogoro Tanzania at the time of the assassination of Karume, some Arab students were arrested after ‘celebrating’ this. I am not stupid nor naïve after having seen myself nearly shot and my late Father too (Please read the articles – relevant parts – Appendices My Broken Heart! and The Glass Is Bent!) – So I knew what to expect. In my diary of the day I wrote – ‘Very sad news today of the assassination of Karume’ in brief. Sometime later – a good friend of mine – an African indigenous sidled down to me whispering to me – It is good they killed the fu …ng bas…rd! – All the time he was chatting and occupying me, my college room was being searched by their peoples.

When I returned, I found my diary at the entry that it was written – and I knew that they must have photographed it – finding nothing on me – they left me alone. A few months later, I left the course and joined ESSO (EXXON) – and a few months still later on left for Oman in November 1973 – under the UN Refugee programme under UAE Rulers then – and after the Accession of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said – May Allah Give him long life and health
– Amin. Omanis started to leave East Africa to return home – after many of their Indian peers had already been millionaires in especially Canada and USA – but those were the dark gloomy days of Oman history!

Strangely my late Father who had gone to Africa to follow his father – my father with his two children at 12 boy (elder brother of mine) and 8 girl (elder sister) and with his wife – all Arabs and Omanis and born in Oman – he was the first one to return to Oman – he was arrested and jailed in Oman. In anger, he sold off all his properties then in 1956 at Quriyat Al Hail Gaaf – the twists and ironies of life – because 6 years later the Zanzibar bloody Revolution wished he did not! Especially when final return in 1972!

The person who bought his property became one of the richest families post the Ascension! Twists and ironies too it was the time of the Dhofar Rebellion wars when he came back in 1972 – and he was arrested (again) because his boat and with others was caught off (suspiciously) outside Dhofar waters – poor peoples desperate to return home and mistaken for rebel supporters instead! The irony too was that we had the same friends protecting us both in Zanzibar and in Oman!

The Arab Spring Uprisings.

I do not want to go into details in this – as too we in Oman did not escape it! However, you are invited to also read this – An Open Letter To The Omani Youth. – http://www.betweenusonly.com/?p=1315

Also http://knowledgeoman.com/en/?p=165 All Under One Flag.

And – http://www.betweenusonly.com/?p=860 Forty Years On!

So What Has Changed Now?

I can safely say this – that Oman will never be the same again. A lot of things have changed. All the things I had tried to pre-warn and counsel have come into being. Especially in my two Management books – Psychology of Arab Management Thinking – and more importantly even in the title itself! – A Cry For Help! The book was published ONE YEAR before The Arab Spring Uprisings!

The Book Theme – A Cry For Help!

A frank, honest, transparent, open and call-a-spade-a-spade no punch-spared, no barrels held stuff and no frills play book exposing the increasing lack of ethics, principles, professionalism and tolerance – plus increased radicalisation, extremism and increased
fundamentalism of the Offices environment – and in similar to the overall similar fast changing facts of the ground in the region.

Addressing the increased extremism, fundamentalism, and lack of tolerance and forbearance in the Arab workforce, Author Majid Al Suleimany presents A Cry for Help! –  Context and Perspectives – Arabian Management Services.

In three parts, A Cry for Help! concentrates on the management styles and aspects of companies located in the Arabian Gulf Cooperation Council that encompasses Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

 It discusses the:

• Growing radicalization of local staff

• Misbehaving Few Expatriates

• Unhappy, dissatisfied local staff

Bad treatment of Local Staff – especially by some Expatriates – mainly Indian, European and Western Staff on the Locals

• Increasing extremism and fundamentalism in The Offices

For more on my books information and details – please visit www.majidbooks.com

Those who thought I was just stirring up the pot in creating artificial troubles, situations and will-not-ever-come-to-pass-in Oman-at least must have their words and tongues eaten up as the Arabs say – because I as an Omani loyal and faithful citizen was sincere, honest and genuine. In the end, I was targeted and marginalized – and I had never received any
Management Projects or Temporary Contracts after that – though I had applied many times to any openings that had arisen!

Sadly and tragically for An Author who knows many profile personalities – including HH, HE and many top Omani CEOs and GMs! – some whom I did successful projects before! You see it is all about my books! I know the sarcastic lot amongst you would add – Should we stop playing the violin now? But that does not bother me at all – my conscience, body and mind is crystal clear – and feel vindicated too – I think! Though very sad, unhappy and desolate that all my cautions and advices went to waste – and this should not have happened to us – as we were a beacon to be followed and to be emulated!

The Omani Youth have now changed forever. See here for all the topics I had written about CHANGES – in addition to my books above – https://majidsn.com/articles-since-january-2009-in-my-two-columns-in-the-oman-daily-observer/ – articles concerning changes only from January 2009 – let alone the books!

I can also say that the worst that has come out of all these is the drawing up of artificial lines and borders on the grounds – and that took the greatest hit and toll is the relationships now and the future mainly between Omanis (especially The Youth) and the Expatriates (The Old
Guards)!

Admittedly, Omanis generally are still over friendly, accommodating, respectful to expatriates – ever still weak and docile – and preferring expatriates to locals at all times – because they are ‘cheaper, trustworthy and more reliable’ syndromes.

Do not get me wrong – I am not against expatriates – especially without the expatriate lower ends labourers GCC countries will not be like what it is today. That is an undeniable fact – even if hard to swallow by some of us! We owe them the thanks appreciation and gratitude too at least!

I agree too that there is still some mass mistreatment and injustice to this labour force – and though steps have been started to amend and remedy the situation – it is still vague and farfetched. Far more needs to be done!

I am not naïve and stupid either – I know there are many jobs that expatriates are still better off in doing and in performance you name it!  Some are so indispensable – that if they go – the establishments they are in would most probably too collapse! The best example is the Municipal Cleaners – at 2 a.m. still cleaning the streets – whilst the rest of Oman is sleeping!

However, if you have read this it will show you that the picture is not that rosy – http://knowledgeoman.com/en/?p=728 Why There Is A Need To Omanise? Also here – http://majidall.com/2011/07/10/equal-opportunity-and-pay/ – Equal Opportunity and Pay! Also – http://main.omanobserver.om/node/57939

The Arab Spring Uprisings.

I do not want to go into details in this – as too we in Oman did not escape it! However, you are invited to also read this – An Open Letter To The Omani Youth. –

Let us also face it

If the tables were turned today and I had to work for my living in UK, USA, Europe or India etc – I will always be on my toes – show I am better than them – either openly (or by hidden innuendos and agendas) – work very hard and diligently – otherwise the natives will take me out of the equation – and ‘they will take our jobs’ – though I may well tend to forget that I am here temporarily – and the job is for their own Nationals first and foremost! And admittedly – there is nothing permanent and forever in life – except God and Death only!

If you have watched Mumbai Calling and Outsourced comedies – you will get the gist of my meaning – of how Indians at least behave lazily at home on the work front!

The Omani Example.

Ask yourself and recorded in history and maritime too – Omanis that went out had created history – and the only non-European colonialists in Africa – see start of this write-up. Their peers that stayed on and suffered in silence and agony – to the gloomy and dark days
in Oman. So what was the difference?

It was the opportunity thrown to them to the former. Today in History books in East Africa they have recorded Omanis as bringing ‘Civilization, Islam and * Cleanliness’ – though the bad side of so-called Slavery too! * Imagine my shock to see how dirty the streets were in 1972 when I came here!

There is also this element why some people will ever prefer for the expatriates to stay on! Who will rent their flats? Read their English Newspapers? Buy in the Supermarkets, Stores, and Cars? Who will the lack-of-confidence-and-trust Omani bosses shout at without impunity? Who will do their jobs – with them only signing the documents prepared by the expatriates? And all the harassments and bad treatments? Surely no fellow Omani takers for that matter!

I think you might have seen these famous British films where the joke and tease is – ‘The Natives Are Restless Tonight! – After the British Colonialists hear some distant drums beatings! – Reminds me of the song Distant Drums by Jim Reeves – that I used to like a lot as a  teenager!

I have always been accused of taking my Readers up to the bridge – and then let the Reader decide for himself to cross the bridge or not! In short, however, there is need for pragmatism, tolerance, harmony, patience, more cooperation – as in all my articles and works.

Sorry for the abrupt end – you see I am really dead tired and fatigued now ….

Take Care!

Muscat – Sultanate of Oman – July 12th 2011.

APPENDICES

*** The Office Fire *** – From – Love Story.

Five days later after the Office fire incident and his fight with the big American CEO, he had quit the place – and taking all his things in his carton. He could not understand why he cared and felt so much for the company – but here he was treated so abruptly, crudely and badly too!

As he pulled out from the place, he was crying first all inside – and then like a baby as he neared home. He had never cried like this ever before! The housemaid said to him – Do not cry boss – everything has a reason, and maybe there is something better for you to come.

The Madam came home – why are you crying Darling? Do Not Cry – God will repay you. You did nothing wrong. The man thought – men do not cry, but why am I crying now? He could not explain it.

***16 Years Old*** Family – From – The Glass Is Bent!

The shot rang out! They have killed my son, the Mother cried out to the rest of the Family huddled inside. Everybody was crying! We have lost our son, the Mother cried to the Father. The shot rang out again. It was all quiet outside the house, nobody knew what was  appening. The one who said he was a Police Official and had lost his job – because of you peoples – had taken the boy outside.

I want your eldest son, pointing his pistol at the family. I want to ask him some questions. When a loaded pistol points at you, there is hardly anything you can do, even if you are many.
Besides, this was a new experience the family had never met before. An armed man who comes into your house, and wanting to kill someone because you come from that group of peoples who had made him lose his Sergeant job – though he was not an Islander, but came from the Mainland. From even a different country for that matter.

Like they say, what goes around comes around. If you do good things to peoples as part of your family’s focus and aspirations, you will be recognized – and good things will come back to you. The other armed men were now shouting to the Ex Police Man,what are doing to the boy? They are innocent peoples, they respect everyone.Besides, they just came to this place. Leave him alone. They were pointing guns at him. Give us your pistol, they said to the man. The man gave it up unwillingly. They  – they called themselves Comrades – they hit him by the butt of the rifle. He fell down. Now run they told him – or we shall shoot you next. Like also in each basket, there are good and bad fish or fruits – take your pick.

Your son is alive – the men told the family – Do Not Cry. He shot at him, but he missed him! It is God’s wish to send us to save you all. You need to come with us, to come to the refugee centre. This town on the outskirts are no longer safe for you peoples. The boy went in, they all hugged him – including his younger brother who was always picking fights with him, trying to undercut him being the leader of the pack!
